Ritzau's Bureau was founded by a young journalist, Erik Nikolai Ritzau, in 1866. Having fought in the 1864 Danish-Preussian war as a second lieutenant, Erik Nikolai Ritzau was hired the following year by a Copenhagen newspaper as an office clerk and proof-reader. He also began reporting from the Danish Parliament and the capital's City Council. Inspired by the paper's editor and the appearance of news agencies in other countries, Erik Nikolai Ritzau, then 26 years old, founded, what he - in an announcement to the public January 31 1866 - called "Nordic Central bureau for political and mercantile telegraph messages". The following day, on February 1, Copenhagen newspapers carried the first reports, with Ritzaus Bureau credits.
